Uzbekistan's Independence Day is celebrated on September 1st as the main national holiday and official day off. It was declared on September 1, 1991, after a special session of the Supreme Council. Festive programs are organized in each region with performances from folklore groups, sports events, variety shows, and food fairs featuring festive pilaf. Special exhibitions and flower festivals are also held across the country. In Tashkent, celebrations include a grand show with hundreds of performers, musicians, and artists, culminating in a dazzling fireworks display. The National Park named after Alisher Navoi is a popular venue for Independence Day festivities.
