The occurrence of metallic minerals in Ethiopia is associated with the Precambrian rocks. Gold has a long history of mining in areas like Benishangul-Gumuz and Adola. Platinum mining is active in the Yubdo area in Wellega and Tullu Mountain area in Sidama. Tantalum deposits can be found in southern Ethiopia, particularly in Adola. Quality Opal gemstones were discovered in Wadla and Dalanta woredas, North Wello. The Danakil region is known for significant potash reserves, while gypsum and anhydrite are abundant in the Red Sea coastal area for the cement industry.
