It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by networking technologies. The history of the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. The US Department of Defense awarded contracts as early as the 1960s, including for the development of the ARPANET project.
