Synthetic antibacterial compounds called nitrofurans were developed in the 1940s-1950s, with a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Main representatives include nitrofurantoin, nitrofurazone, furazolidone. Mechanism: inhibits bacterial growth by disrupting bacterial enzymes and DNA synthesis. Initially widely used in medicine and veterinary, limited in some countries due to carcinogenic and toxic risks
