Backformation in Modern English

Tavsif

Backformation is a morphological word-formation process where new words are created by removing perceived affixes from existing words. Predominantly observed in English, it has led to the creation of around 200 new verbs from nouns over the past centuries. Examples include "edit" from "editor" and "enthuse" from "enthusiasm." This process remains relevant today with contributions to neologisms, especially in specialized fields like computer science.
