MRSA is a type of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that is resistant to penicillinase-resistant penicillins. It can cause skin and soft tissue infections, as well as more serious and life-threatening infections such as septicemia, abscesses, meningitis, and pneumonia. It was first reported in England in 1961 and requires different antibiotics, such as vancomycin, for treatment.
